It’s time for the reveal of my ‘Sashiko Project bag’ *yay* I have had a lot of positive feedback on the WIP post, so I hope you’ll also like the end result! Apart from crochet, the bag will introduce two additional techniques: Sashiko embroidery and lining a bag with an invisible stitch (by hand). You don’t need any previous experience with embroidery or sewing, because everything is explained with pictures, text and/or helpful links, and if you can make chains and single crochets, you can crochet this bag : )

Inspiration / Inspiratie

Practical and pretty. That’s what I was looking for, and that is exactly what sashiko embroidery is all about! This simple running stitch creates a rather stunning effect, and while embroidery has a reputation for being ‘a lot of work’, I can assure you the hours will fly by when you work the soothing rhythms of the running stitch <3

The stitch I used is called the ‘Persimmon tree stitch’ and when the pattern goes live, I will tell you all about it! Sashiko embroidery is centuries old and of course it would be a shame if I would not share that history with you <3

Buy the yarn / Koop het garen

For the yarn I used Scheepjes Catona* in a gorgeous blue color and an off-white contrasting color. These colors are also often used with sashiko. I chose the Catona deliberately, because it’s smooth, which lets you see the stitches very clearly. Because of the embroidery, this is a must. Moreover, it gives a sturdy fabric, which is ideal for a project bag <3

Obligatory ‘action shot’! I do have a bit of a confession to make about this shot: My sister can’t actually knit, so we staged the knitting *gasp*. It is not for lack of trying though, because I did teach her to knit a while ago (and she was quite good at it), but it is just not her thing. Oh well, to each their own : )

I hope to publish the pattern for the Sashiko Project bag in a few days. It will be free on my blog, so if you don’t want to miss any of my posts, please follow me on Facebook, Instagram (@aspoonfulofyarn) or subscribe via email at the bottom of this page.
