Welcome to this weeks part of the ‘Inspirational Hexies’ blog serie! If you missed last weeks post with a retro theme, you can read it here. This new post will be all about kimono! My love for Japanese things began when Memoirs of a Geisha came out. I know, very corny, but I just loved the book and the movie. Since then I got into a period where I needed to know everything about kimono and I even have one hanging in my home (you’ll also see the obi (waistband) of my kimono in this weeks moodboard).

Moodboard / Inspiratiebord

For the moodboard I used a maneki neko (cat for good luck), the obi that goes with my kimono (the orange thingy), some origami paper, artwork depicting a geisha, an artbook with work of Audrey Kawasaki (love her work), the shoes that also came with my kimono, some shade cards and some Catona Cutie Pies* and Stone Washed balls from the Colour Pack*.

As you can see some areas of the obi are tightly embroidered in cloudshapes. This makes it very heavy!

The hexie / De hexie

Of course I could not help myself and chose to use my own kimono for this Hexie. I love the combination of blue and orange next to the rainbow colors of my kimono. They really make me happy : ) For the yarn I used 9 rounds of different colors of Catona Cutie Pies from my Scheepjes Studio Pack*. You can find the used colors below.

What colors do you think of when you think of kimono? You can use my colors, or come up with your own colorway. You can find the pattern of this hexie here. Don’t forget to show me your color combination on social media, using #inspirationalhexies, because I’d love to see it!

  • I also love all Japanese textile related crafts – Kumihimo has been my passion for over fifteen years! Off to the fourth International Kumihimo Conference in Japan 2019 !

    • oh yes, kumihimo is also a very good example of fine japanese textile work 🙂

  • The kimono is so beautiful! I love the colors you put together. Happy, happy, happy!

  • I wish more designers drew inspiration from kitsuke and Japanese textiles. We put so much care in choosing motifs and colours for each occasion and season and it never ceases to please the eye.
But while I realise that everyone can’t know everything all the time, I’m genuinely sad that many still regard Memoirs of a Geisha as respectable. The author was an unethical American who made up facts and lied and coerced many people in the hana world to get personal stories for his characters. There are far better sources of information and even better inspiration for those who are not Japanese and want to learn about the traditions that go back thousands of years.

    • Hi Inoue, Thank you for weighing in. In my inspirational hexie posts, I choose crafts and books around a subject that inspire me and I hope that it will inspire others too. If this was a meant as a blogpost with resources of factual information about kimono, I would agree with you. However, these posts are about inspiration and what inspires me. I am recommending the book as a work of fiction and because it is the reason why I got interested in kimono in the first place. I do not regard it as factually correct and I am aware of the fact that the author took some liberties with the story. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a nice read and that is all I wanted to bring across. I hope you will understand that.
