As some of you might know, I have a loving fascination for Bees. If you follow me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve seen my stories regarding the bee hotels we have in our garden. I can just stare at those for hours on end <3

Can you spot the bumble bee? Kan je de hommel vinden?

The 20th of May is World Bee Day, designated by the UN since 2017 to: “raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development.” Because they are not only super fascinating, but also enormously important to our food supply and eco systems.

Bee-inspired patterns

Over the years I have made a few bee-inspired patterns and projects as well and I thought it would be fun to share them all into one post and also offer you a discount to celebrate World Bee Day : )

Hotel of Bees Shawl

This shawl is inspired by the ‘Hotel of Bees’ from the book All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr. I was fascinated by the notion of an old hotel with enormous bee frescoes on the ceilings and woodwork along the doors <3
The shawl is made into three sections, repeating some of the stitch patterns. The fun thing about this shawls construction is that it starts at the widest point and decreases from there, making you go faster with every row : ) Read all about this shawl and its inspiration here.

Plum Trees & Bees shawl

This shawl is inspired by blossom orchards and the bees who set to work within them. Imagine to walk under the trees and hear the drone of the worker bees. Smell the rich smell of the nectar, feel the light breeze on your skin on that perfect Spring day <3
You can read all about this shawl on this page. And you can find the free blog pattern here.

History of Bees shawl

This last shawl (I guess I have a thing for bees as well as shawls :’) ) is the History of Bees shawl and is inspired by the book ‘The History of bees’ by Maja Lunde. It was also the pattern for last years annual Read-with-me CAL, where we crochet on the same pattern and read together in the same book that inspired the pattern. Very much fun for book and crochet lovers : )
You can read about this shawl and the CAL here.

Inspirational Hexie blanket

Lastly I did a special blanket/blog project where I combined different colors in a hexagon, each representing a theme. Two of them were bee themed. You can read all about this project here and find all the themes and Hexies.

  • Good Afternoon, love this post, I am a bee enthusiast myself!! Do you have a pattern for the sweater you are wearing in this post? The colors look similar to your maple leaf cardigan but the one you are wearing appears to be knit. Thanks so much!!

    • Thank you for your kind words 🙂 Indeed the cardigan is handknit. I got the pattern from a magazine, but I’m not sure which one. It’s knitted with double seed stitch so maybe you can search for that?

      • Thank you so much for your quick reply. I thought that was the stitch, I am currently working on a hat with the same stitch. 🙂 Love your patterns and blog as I am a long time subscriber, have a great day.

    • So glad you asked this question I too was interested in the sweater. Which looked a little bee-like also. : )
