Sometimes things don’t go as planned. I can say this is truly the case for my Mexican Gothic Shawl pattern. Because the plan was to release this design as a CAL and Read-along somewhere mid-October. It’s such a good book (Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia) to snuggle up on the couch and read with a nice cup of tea. It truly fits the Fall season with its misty hill-top mansion and mystery theme. And I was really excited to host a new CAL and read-along, since the 2020 Scheepjes CAL/Read-along was such fun <3
Well, that was the plan.
In the meantime we renovated our home, got married and we are expecting a baby (due at the end of December). And I thought I could do it all, but needles to say there wasn’t much room and energy to design and plan a CAL. I tried so hard to get it all finished, but it really felt like a struggle that just wasn’t going to happen. So at the end of October I made the decision to let go of the CAL idea. Instead I am bringing you the crochet pattern and I encourage you to read the book while crocheting this shawl, because it’s a good one. It even won Goodreads book of the year 2020, so I am not the only one who likes it, haha.

Okay so now onto the pattern! : D

Inspiration / Inspiratie

Last Fall I read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I fell in love with the story, the mystery, the eerie feeling you get when reading the book while it never truly becomes scary (I cannot cope with horror at all, if that’s any indication). The cold damp air you can almost feel against your skin and all the pretty descriptions between it all.

I took elements from the book (as with all my patterns from the Read-With-Me Collection) and designed a shawl around the story in seven sections, inspired by floral, mycelial and fungal elements. Because I don’t want to spoil too much, I won’t tell you exactly what the sections are. You just have to read the book and find out for yourself ; ) With all kinds of different techniques and textures, there won’t be a dull moment with this shawl, I will promise you that : )

Yarn substitutes / Garen alternatieven

If mohair isn’t your thing, or out of your budget, you can substitute it for using just one yarn instead of two yarns held together. It needs to be a yarn that’s a bit thicker than the Scheepjes Whirlette, so you’ll end up with a shawl of roughly the same size as the sample. Good substitutes could be:

* Scheepjes Stone Washed regular (cotton/acrylic mix)*
* Scheepjes Bamboo Soft (bamboo/cotton mix)*
* Scheepjes Metropolis (wool/nylon mix)*
* Scheepjes Colour Crafter (anti-pilling acrylic)*

* Scheepjes Stone Washed regular (katoen/acryl mix)*
* Scheepjes Bamboo Soft (bamboe/katoen mix)*
* Scheepjes Metropolis (wol/nylon mix)*
* Scheepjes Colour Crafter (anti-pilling acryl)*
