Intro

This tutorial is written for my Watercolor Granny Blanket pattern, but you can apply this information to any project you’d like to combine a lot of different colors in : )
I made this blanket with scraps of Scheepjes Catona Colour Pack* and the Scheepjes Stone Washed and River Washed Colour Pack*. For the border I used 1.5 balls of Scheepjes Stonewashed.

Color Theory & the Color Wheel / Kleurentheorie & het Kleurenwiel

Primary & Secondary Colors / Primaire & Secundaire Kleuren
As you can see in the color wheel above, color variations are created by mixing colors together. You have the primary colors: Yellow, Blue and Red. When mixed they will create the secondary colors: Green (Yellow+Blue), Purple (Blue+Red) and Orange (Yellow+Red).

Warm versus Cool Colors / Warme versus Koele Kleuren
What’s also noticable in the color wheel is that colors are grouped into warm and cool colors. Warm colors have a higher Yellow or Red content. Cool colors have a higher Blue content.
Next to the Yellow, Red or Blue content, the warmth of a color is also determined by the amount of white, grey or black. Warm colors usually contain a darker grey or black. Cool colors usually contain a lighter grey or white.

Grouping Colors / Kleuren groeperen

With the above knowledge, you can start grouping colors together to use in your blanket. For the Watercolor Granny Blanket, I grouped together the Blues&Purples, Reds, Pinks & Purples, Yellows&Oranges, Greens&Yellows and Greens&Blues. I did not use any greys or browns.

Blues&Purples / Blauwen&Paarsen

These purples are grouped with the blues, because they all have blue in their mix. You can also see a few blues that have a tiny bit red in them, making them a little bit purple-ish. All these colors are predominantly cool.

Reds, Pinks & Purples / Roden, Rozen & Paarsen

As you can see below, I tried to show a gradient from red red, red pinks, blue pinks and red purples. The purples are vastly different than the purples in the blue section above, because they have more red in their mix. The more red is in the mix, the warmer the color. All colors below have in common that there is red in each of them.

Yellows&Oranges / Gelen&Oranjes

Below you’ll see the Yellows&Oranges. You might notice that the oranges are much warmer than the yellows. That’s because of the red in their mix. However, oranges can be cool as well if there’s more white in the mix (see the third color from the top left as an example).

Greens&Yellows / Groenen&Gelen

The greens from below all have yellow in them. That doesn’t necessarily make them warm colors, though. But a lot warmer than the blue greens of the next section. That’s why I grouped them separately.

Greens&Blues / Groenen&Blauwen

These greens all have blue in them, making them quite cold.

Creating a Gradient in the Blanket / Een Kleurverloop in de Deken Maken

Now that you’ve grouped your colors, and using the following tips, it’s easier to create a gradient:

  • With colored pencils or a coloring programm/app, plan out the different colored sections you’d like to have within your blanket before you start;
  • Find a common color when transitioning from one color to the next: for example when working with blue, transition one side to blue-ish green and the other side to blue-ish purple. Or when working with red, transition one side to oranges and the other side to pinks. See the first image below for an example of the red-orange-pink transition;
  • Be mindful of dark and light colors next to each other. It’s better to put light colors next to light colors and vice versa. From the light you can work towards the darker colors and the other way around;
  • Also be mindful of warm and cool colors next to each other. It’s best to work warm colors next to warm colors and work towards cool colors and vice versa.
  • When you want to make the transition flow better or if there are two colors next to each other that don’t work quite well, mix the two colors in one granny square by using a different color for the first and second round. See the second image below for an example.

  • Plan de verschillende kleursecties die je in je deken wilt hebben voor je begint met kleurpotloden of een kleurprogramma/app;
  • Vind een gemeenschappelijke kleur als je met een kleurovergang bezig bent: bijvoorbeeld als je bezig bent met blauw, werk dan een zijde naar blauw-groen en de andere zijde naar blauw-paars. Of als je met rood bezig bent, werk een zijde naar oranjes en de andere zijde naar rozen. Zie een voorbeeld van de rood-oranje-roze kleurovergang in de eerste foto hieronder;
  • Let op dat je donkere en lichte kleuren niet gelijk naast elkaar hebt. Het is beter om lichte kleuren naast lichte kleuren te zetten en vice versa. Vanuit het licht kun je dan geleidelijk naar het donker werken en andersom;
  • Let ook op warme en koele kleuren. Warme kleuren kun je beter naast warme kleuren zetten en van daaruit naar koele kleuren toewerken en andersom;

If you follow all of these tips, you’re bound to get a stunning gradient : )

Color Inspiration / Kleureninspiratie

Of course it is not necessary to use all the colors of the rainbow. You can also stick to just a few colors and combine those within the same project. See a few color examples below from my Inspirational Hexies Blanket. If you every lack color inspiration, the Inspirational Hexies Series comes with a full blogpost series of a whopping 32 hexies and their surrounding themes : D
In the examples below you’ll see that some are a combination of warm and cool colors. Depending on which colors they are next to, this can work really well.
